Dr Nicholas M Sharer BSc DM FRCP

Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist

Nick Sharer was appointed as a Consultant Physician in 1996.  He qualified from Southampton Medical School and completed training in Portsmouth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Manchester before returning to the South Coast.

 

As a consultant Gastroenterologist he specializes in diseases of the GI tract and the endoscopic techniques required in diagnosing and treating conditions as varied as oesophageal strictures, peptic ulcers, coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis).    His research interests have been related to pancreatic and liver disease. He is a member of British Association of Study of the Liver (BASL) and has chaired the Regional HPB (Hepato-Pancreatic Biliary) cancer multi-disciplinary team.  Prior to becoming a doctor, he was a research biochemist and utilizes this expertise in advising on nutrition.  As a liver and pancreas doctor many of his patients suffer from the effects of alcohol excess.  Dr Sharer's role as clinical lead of the highly acclaimed University Hospitals Dorset Alcohol Care and Treatment Service (ACTS), allows a team approach to helping this type of problem.

NHS Appointments

 

Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist to University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust.  Dr Sharer's provides outpatient clinics through which he manages the full range of general gastroenterology problems with specialist interest in liver and pancreas-related conditions, coeliac disease, stomach and bowel symptoms as well as nutrition and weight loss.  Having previously been endoscopy training lead he now performs gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy, as well as the therapeutic procedures associated with these tests such as structure dilatation, variceal banding, polyp removal and gastrostomy and stent insertion.

Research

 

Dr Sharer’s research as a biochemist included studies on vitamin B12, folic acid, paracetamol analysis and carcinogens.     His medical doctorate thesis in 2002 focused on biochemical pathways in pancreatitis.  His publications also include genetic susceptibility to pancreatitis and treatments for this potentially devastating disease.  His research interests remain varied and currently include the delivery of alcohol dependency services and cancer screening.
